The Multi-lingual Translator is a unique product that will allow you to translate words between many different languages, even if the languages do not use standard Latin characters.  All you need to do is transliterate the foreign letters into the appropriate Latin characters, and watch the translations appear.  Translate between Russian and English, English and German, or whatever language that you want.

Even if you do not know how to transliterate foreign letters, this program will help.   See Help...  I do not know how to transliterate foreign languages.

The translation database is open for the public to build upon.  If you have additional words that you want added for an existing language, or if you want to add a brand new language to the Multi-lingual Translator, see How do new words or languages get added?

FAQ:

Question: Help...  I do not know how to transliterate foreign languages.

The Multi-lingual Translator program can help.  One of the options that you have is "Show transliteration guides".  If you select this option, the program will show you a guide with the non-Latin letter and the corresponding transliterated Latin letter.  Click here for a screen shot showing the transliterate guides for Russian and German.

Question: How do I get updates to the program and database?

Registered users of the Multi-lingual Translator program will be sent an email every time there is a update available to the program or the database.  If you do not have email, then you will need to periodically check this website for updates.

Question: How do new words or languages get added?

New words and languages are added by people like yourself.  If you are fluent in a language and want to have words in this language added to the Multi-lingual Translator database, please do the following

  1. If you want to add words for a language that does not exist yet in the Multi-lingual Translator database (currently English, Italian, German, and Russian), please contact me, letting me know the language that you want to add.
  2. Using Microsoft ACCESS, open the file c:\program files\Multi-lingual Translator\multilingual.mdb
  3. Open the ACCESS table "Multilingual"
  4. Enter the English spelling under the ENGLISH column
  5. If you can type the foreign word using its native characters (i.e., Cyrillic characters for Russian), enter the foreign word under the proper column (Italian, German, or Russian)
  6. If you cannot type the foreign word using its native characters, enter the Latin character transliteration of the foreign word under the proper column (Italian_Transliterated, German_Transliterated, or Russian_Transliterated)
  7. Save the file

If you added words using the native characters, let the Multi-lingual Translator program transliterate your new words

  1. Run the Multi-lingual Translator program
  2. Select as the FROM language the language that you just added words for
  3. Click on TOOLS
  4. Click on TRANSLITERATE FROM LANGUAGE
  5. If you wish to share these new words with other users of the Multi-lingual Translator program, email me the file c:\program files\Multi-lingual Translator\multilingual.mdb.

Question: How many words and languages are in the database?

Currently, the database has the following...

English 1855 words
Italian 50 words
German 643 words
Polish 188 words
Russian 1821 words
Spanish 1653 words

Do you want to add new words or languages to this database?

Question: I cannot see the entire screen.  The right side and bottom are missing.

One of two things can cause this problem.

  1. Your computer resolution is set to 600x480.  This program requires a minimum resolution of 800x600.  To change the resolution of your monitor, please do the following
  1. Minimize any programs that you have running so that you can see your computers desktop.
  2. Click on MY COMPUTER
  3. Click on CONTROL PANEL
  4. Click on DISPLAY
  5. Click on the SETTINGS tab
  6. Change the resolution to 800x600
  7. Click on OK

or

  1. Your computer is set to LARGE fonts.  This program requires SMALL fonts.  To change the font size, please do the following
  1. Minimize any programs that you have running so that you can see your computers desktop.
  2. Click on MY COMPUTER
  3. Click on CONTROL PANEL
  4. Click on DISPLAY
  5. Click on the SETTINGS tab
  6. Click in the ADVANCED button

Question: I am getting the error 'No CE Signature Found' when trying to install the program

This error is caused when the file download did not complete successfully.  Please download the file again.  If you continue to have problems, look at I am having problems downloading the program.

Question: I am getting the error 'The file may not be supported by AOL.  AOL will try to open it as a test
file if you choose to continue' when trying to install the program

If America Online is your default Web browser, use Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator as your default Web browser.  For information about changing your default Web browser, see the online Help in Internet Explorer or Navigator, or contact AOL for instructions.

Question: I am having problems downloading the program

You may be having problems downloading the file due to its size.  I would suggest that you download and install Netscape's SmartDownload.

"SmartDownload is a service from Netscape Netcenter designed to assist you with downloading files from the Internet. Key features of SmartDownload are its ability to pause and resume downloads, recover from a dropped Internet connection, and show informative content from Netcenter while downloading."

If you continue to have problems downloading the file, please contact me, and I will email you the file.

Question: I downloaded the files, but do not know what to do with them

  1. When you downloaded the file setup-ml.exe, you indicated where on your computer the file should be saved.  Let us assume the name of this directory is c:\windows\temp.   Using Windows Explorer, go to this directory and run setup-ml.exe (it might appear as setup-ml application).  setup-ml.exe is a self extracting zip file, and will prompt you for where the extracted files should go.  Enter the directory on your computer that the extracted files should go, and press FINISH.
  2. Once you have run the setup-ml.exe program, use Windows Explorer and go to the directory that you 'unzipped' the files to.   In this directory you need to run the file setup.exe (it might appear as setup application).  Follow the on-screen instructions to install the Multi-lingual Translator program.

Question: I want to uninstall the program.  How do I do this?

Using Windows Explorer, delete the "c:\program files\Multi-lingual Translator" folder.

Question: Is there a MAC version?

Unfortunately, there is currently no MAC version available.

Question: What are the minimum computer requirements to use the Multi-lingual Translator?
